What we offer

Consultation

All patients must be referred by their family doctor to whom all reports will be sent. Comprehensive medical consultations are 2-hours in length and cover a detailed personal history with a trauma informed approach, as well as any necessary physical examinations and utilization of surface electromyography and motion analysis as appropriate. Patients are required to bring their instrument to their consultation and must complete questionnaires prior to the appointment.

Performance Exposure Therapy Program

Performance exposure therapy sessions are 2-hours in length and require you to bring your musical instrument. Each session will have a theme and variations on the modified CBT protocol with homework. Imaginal exposures will be created by the musician and autonomic psychophysiology and ergonomic biofeedback measurements will be used. This includes surface electromyography and motion analysis (Noraxon), heart rate variability (Heart Math), and neurobiofeedback (Muse & Thought Technology).

Medical Psychotherapy

Trauma informed care is central to the psychotherapy provided by the Musicians’ Clinics of Canada. Sessions are tailored to the specific needs of the individual with a range of different therapeutic frameworks utilized. Musicians can be referred for many reasons, including mental health difficulties, performance anxiety, industry-specific challenges, substance use, or for support during transitions in their life. All physicians have completed training with the Medical Psychotherapy Association of Canada. All physicians also have a focused practice designation, meaning family physicians will not be negated for their patients who receive psychotherapy at the clinic.

After initial consultation you may be given access to medical cannabis depending on your specific needs. Cannabis and non-cannabis related interventions will be monitored with an integrative medicine approach to review the impact of treatment, dose titration and side effects. Patients may have up to four 30-minute reassessments a year which can be done in person or virtually (if seen in person within the last 24 months as per OHIP guidelines).
